First flame-retardant material for SLA

Cubicure develops UL94 V0-classified, halogen-free photopolymer

UL94 V0-classified materials offer flame retardancy without formation of burning drops.
Evolution FR, the new photopolymer by Cubicure, meets these stringent requirements, thus making it worldwide the first SLA material of its kind. This new material for additive manufacturing enables applications in the mobility sector and electronics market. At Formnext 2019 Cubicure will present the new flame-retardant material Evolution FR for the first time.

Vienna, November 04th 2019. Cubicure expands its product portfolio with Evolution FR, the first flame-retardant photopolymer for SLA. The new material system reaches UL94 V0, which has so far only been realized by additive manufacturing technologies such as material extrusion or powder bed fusion. However, when it comes to mimicking injection molding-type surface quality and precision, lithography-based additive manufacturing technologies are still the methods of choice. Additionally, material solutions with combined heat resistance (typically > 70 °C) and sufficient mechanical performance of the final 3D-parts (e.g. tensile strength > 30 MPa) are required to realize specific industrial applications with 3D-printing. The Hot Lithography platform developed by Cubicure enables photopolymers with such thermoplast-like material performance as well as a manufacturing precision down to 10 µm resolution.
 
Evolution FR enables new possibilities for industrial 3D-printing
The flame-retardant and halogen-free photopolymer Evolution FR can be precisely 3D-structured with the patented Hot Lithography technology developed by Cubicure. The combination of this new material system and the stable and precise 3D-printing technology opens new application fields for Additive Manufacturing, especially for the mobility sector (e.g. railway) and electronics market (e.g. plugs, connectors). Polymers for such demanding applications need to fulfill certain standards and classifications to guarantee proper safety for end users. Flame retardancy, which is tested under the UL94 standard procedure, is among the most important requirements of such parts.
By fulfilling this classification, Evolution FR is giving a first strong answer for spare part logistics in AM.
 
UL94 classification
The UL94 protocol is a test procedure to evaluate the flammability of polymers, where the burning time as well as the dripping of burning parts or formation of burning drops is investigated. The V0-classification calls for self-extinguishing of a flame within 10 s from a vertically clamped sample and an afterglow of maximum 30 s. The V0-classification, using an ignition source of 50 W, counts as one of the highest classifications for flame-retardant polymers.
